Abstract

This essay reviews certain general characteristics of the Greek language, some aspects of the "Homeric question'' and the importance of the oral tradition in the transmission of the Homeric poems. In addition, themes and formulae are briefly considered. Through the study of vision an attempt is made to identify whether this is a way in which the poet's view of reality may be revealed and whether whithin this we can find some indications of the presence of a body of moral values. Wonderment is studied in some detail in this respect. In brief, this is fundamentally an aesthetic analysis of the moral value of observation and vision.
