The vertical myth: Two phantasmagorias of 19th century Santiago

Abstract

The experience of Santiago as a social representation of a Western «the other world» has a «vertical» mythical variant that appeals to the double urban phantasmagoria of infra level and ultra level. This article explores such variants of the historical imaginary applying two formulas from the last third of the 19th century, which are as dissimilar as complementary; on the one hand, the underground city, in the popular novel by Ramón Pacheco; on the other, the overhead city, in the remodeling of the Santa Lucía hill
