Psychoanalytical Approach to Theatre Rehearsal: Some Preliminary Notes on Transference

Main Article Content

Gustavo Geirola Whittier

Abstract

This essay discusses the signifi cance of a psychoanalytic approach to theatre rehearsal, and supports the need of a new theoretical perspective for the actor and director’s training and work. Consequently, the essay introduces some psychoanalytical concepts to the theory of theatre as elaborated by Lacan in many of his Seminars. It also invites readers to revisit Stanislavski’s method or system, collective creation and psychodrama’s assumptions. Concepts of transference, fantasy and desire allow opening a debate on multiple political and cultural aspects during rehearsal, such as time, fi ction, truth and body.
