Abstract

The following essay presents preliminary results of a research about a diptych by sandro Botticelli, on which there is little documentation. The main purpose of this study is to establish a hypothesis regarding the identity of the owner and an alternative option to the common dating of this work, taking into consideration its significance in a specific cultural context, as well as the possible functions of this piece of art as an object. The hypothesis is organizing a series of iconographic and literary background, complemented by theoretical background about the iconographic identification of the botanical motif, which has a great relevance for the interpretation of the artwork, and that has a close relation to the ancient thought and the recognition of emerging gender issues in Renaissance art.
