Abstract

The advancement of technologies has enabled unlimited representation in interconnected data networks found in different contexts, but faces the problem of missing interpretations in descriptions. This study has a quali-quantitative approach, a descriptive character, and an experimental design with a cross-sectional perspective. Its objective is to analyze the influence of metadata on the attribution of relevant information retrieval about art collections. Methodological procedures include document and comparative analysis. The state of representation of pictorial works in 34 museums and galleries in Europe, North America, and the Caribbean was analyzed. 38 metadata dedicated to description were examined on the sample websites. The results show the predominance of metadata with descriptive and structural typology, with little depth in terms of interpretative analysis of the works. Descriptive behavior lacks the necessary depth. Therefore, the application of semantic and interdisciplinary methods is of utmost importance to achieve a more accurate and logically structured sense of the information, to open up new knowledge and to offer interoperable data that can be effectively retrieved.
