Abstract

This article reports the results of the evaluation process of a method that aims to support students designing in order to evoke predetermined emotions. The method relies on two tools that deliver detailed knowledge of particular emotions. These tools are structured from the appraisal theory of emotions, which states that these are elicited by the appraisal of events and situations. To fulfill the aim of this study, 54 Design students implemented the method and its tools. This method was evaluated through a mixed research approach, that is, through qualitative and quantitative data. The results show that the method and tools are useful for students to complete a design task that aims to elicit predetermined emotions. Participants reported that the process and tools used had a positive impact on the way they generate ideas, on the way they design (based on scientific knowledge) and on their own understanding of the emotional dimension that underlies the person-object interaction.
