Abstract

This work has the overall goal of creating a tool to assess the quality of information in newscasts of four Spanish regional TV stations, based on the following indicators: formal features; construction and prioritization of the topic; agenda, newsworthiness, typology and treatment, and geographical distribution. We applied a content analysis with its own variables matrix on a sample of 32 prime time newscasts and 1327 units and tested its utility to evaluate informational quality. The analysis detects, for the examined stations, a tendency towards an infotainment model, with peculiar dynamics depending on the ownership

Pablo Gómez-Domínguez, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, España

has a degree in audiovisual communication from the Universidad de Barcelona. Currently, he is an industrial Ph.D. student at the Department of Communication at the Universidad Pompeu Fabra and the Catalan Corporation of Audiovisual Media (CCMA). His research interests focuses on public service media, digital audiences, the Catalan space of communication and media quality

Carlos Aguilar Paredes, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, España

is associated professor in audiovisual communication at the School of Library and Information Science of the Universidad de Barcelona. Ph.D. from the UB, his research focuses on the search for quantitative methodologies for audiovisual content in both traditional media and Internet. He also spends part of his research to the study of active audiences. He is a researcher collaborator on the project Democràtica Qualitat dels serveis de les televisions informatius autonòmiques: estudi comparatiu i proposta didactics [Democratic quality and information services of regional networks: a comparative study] (2014 Democ 00013).

Sergio Villanueva Baselga, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, España

is an assistant professor in the degree on audiovisual communication at the School of Library and Information Science at the Universidad de Barcelona. Ph.D. from the same university, his research focuses on citizen participation in the media, the study of citizen media and confluences between cinema and other media with different forms of activism. He is part of the project Democràtica Qualitat dels serveis de les televisions informatius autonòmiques: estudi comparatiu i proposta didactics [Democratic quality and information services of regional networks: a comparative study] (2014 Democ 00013).

Lydia Sánchez Gómez, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, España

is professor of audiovisual communication at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Barcelona. Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford University, her research focuses on the democratic quality of media from a Habermasian perspective. She is a specialist in theory of materialism applied to the media. She is the leading investigator of the project Democràtica Qualitat dels serveis de les televisions informatius autonòmiques: estudi comparatiu i proposta didactics [Democratic quality and information services of regional networks: a comparative study] (2014 Democ 00013).
