Relationship between online and offline political participation in sub-national campaigns

Abstract

As part of the study of electoral behavior in digital environments, the question arises as to whether electoral campaigns with a high presence in socio-digital networks stimulate online participation by citizens and if this translates into a higher offline participation. In order to know and compare the relationship between online and offline political participation, in its conventional and non-conventional modalities, we applied a post-electoral digital analytical survey to the electoral campaigns of the Mexican states of Nuevo León in 2015 (N = 294) and Puebla in 2016 (N = 301), the first highly focused on digital media as opposed to the second. We found differences in digital involvement, which have an impact on the electoral game. For Nuevo León, we found a greater relationship between the use of social networks and the predisposition to participate online, while in Puebla nonconventional political participation was most related to the predisposition to participate politically online. We explain these findings in relation to the degree of digitization of each campaign and the techno-social context in general.

PhD in Social Sciences from the Technological Institute of Higher Studies of Monterrey (ITESM), Monterrey Campus and Master of Science with a specialty in International Communication from the same institution (Mexico). Member of the National System of Researchers, level I. She is a research professor at the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC). His investigations address the conformation of the scientific field of political communication in Mexico and subjects related to political communication, the processes of political socialization and political participation.

Carlos Muñiz, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (México)

PhD in Communication and currently full professor at the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (Mexico). He is a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers with level II. His main lines of research focus on the analysis of the effects of the media and political communication, especially from the informative treatment (framing) of events and the representations of social groups in media content.

Martín Echeverría, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla BUAP (México)

Communicologist, PhD in Communication and Culture (University of Seville), Master in Political Communication and Public Opinion (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona). Research professor at the Institute of Government Sciences and Strategic Development, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, México. Member of the National System of Researchers, level I. His lines of research are the audiovisual formats of political communication, studies in political journalism and the relationship between media consumption, youth and politics.
